Yu Matsuzawa is a gastroenterologist and endoscopist performing his postdoctoral research in the Cadwell lab. He graduated from Nagoya City University in 2007, and received his PhD from Tokyo Medical and Dental University (TMDU) in 2015. As part of his MD training, he saw many inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients, and became interested in the pathogenesis of IBD. He did his PhD research in the lab of Prof. Mamoru Watanabe, and found that an ubiquitin-modifying enzyme A20 promotes CD4 T cell survival by restricting mTOR and promoting autophagy. As IBD involves both genetic and environmental factors, he specifically joined the Cadwell lab to learn how to interrogate the environmental component of the disease, especially intestinal infectious agents. His goal is to integrate his previous training in mucosal immunity with virology and microbiology and make unique contributions to the field.
